Concreting – Key Standards & Codes
AS 3600 – Concrete Structures
Main standard for the design and construction of concrete structures.
AS 2870 – Residential Slabs and Footings
Critical for housing foundations; includes soil classifications and footing system design.
AS 1379 – Specification and Supply of Concrete
Covers concrete mix, quality, and supply compliance.
AS 1012 Series – Methods of Testing Concrete
Guidelines for slump testing, compressive strength, and curing.
AS 3850 – Prefabricated Concrete Elements
For pre-cast panels and off-site components.
NCC (National Construction Code) Volume 2 (for housing)
Refers to AS 3600 and AS 2870 for compliance in residential works.
🪨 Earthworks – Key Standards & Codes
AS 3798 – Guidelines on Earthworks for Commercial and Residential Developments
Defines compaction requirements, testing, and fill material standards.
AS 2159 – Piling – Design and Installation
Used if piering or piling is needed for ground support.

Governs safe excavation practices and site risk controls.
Dial Before You Dig / Utility Locating
Mandatory before excavation to avoid underground services.
Environmental Planning Instruments (LEP/DA)
Local council requirements must be checked, especially for cut/fill, retaining walls, and drainage.
FAQs – Earthworks & Concreting
1. Do I need council approval for concreting or earthworks on my property?
In many cases, minor works like driveways or small slabs don’t require approval. However, significant excavation, retaining walls, or works near boundaries often do. Always check with your local council or consult us for advice.
2. How long does it take for concrete to cure?
Concrete typically takes 24–48 hours to set enough for light foot traffic, but full curing (for strength) takes 28 days. We recommend waiting at least 7 days before placing heavy loads.
3. What is included in earthworks before concreting?
Earthworks usually involve site clearing, excavation, soil compaction, levelling, and preparation for drainage. This ensures the slab or structure is built on stable ground.
4. What type of concrete should I use for my project?
That depends on the application — for driveways, a 25–32 MPa concrete mix with steel reinforcement is standard. For structural slabs, we follow AS 3600 and AS 2870 guidelines based on your soil type and load requirements.
5. How do you ensure the concrete won’t crack?
While all concrete can crack, we minimise this by using proper reinforcement, control joints, correct curing methods, and high-quality concrete mixes. We also assess soil movement and drainage during preparation.
